El Salvador Cerro Negro Pacamara
José Armando Portillo has been growing coffee for 25 years. He bought Cerro Negro four years ago together with his mother and brother. Cerro Negro was neglected by its previous owner, so the Portillo Peraza family had to start by controlling weeds and pruning shade trees. At Cerro Negro, José employs two permanent workers and 30 during harvest. He pays 30% more than the average wage to his pickers and he’s convinced that his good relationship with them allowed him to be successful this year. Olympia Coffee is bringing Cerro Negro into our Direct Trade coffee program. Jose’s enthusiasm for this can be read in his eyes; he is already making plans for next year including investing in his own depulper (wet mill), maintaining farm roads, and growing more Pacamara. All this while generating more jobs in the area, and more importantly, providing a better future for his wife and three children. Olympia Coffee Roasting is the exclusive roaster of all Cerro Negro Pacamara this year, outside of the lot that won 14th place in the 2011 El Salvador Cup of Excellence. We take great pride in securing this fantastic, award-winning coffee.
